Buying guide

Security cameras in the UAE come down to two decisions that everything else follows from: indoor or outdoor, and local storage or cloud. Get those right and the model choice narrows.

Indoor cameras are the simplest. A 1080p or 2K indoor unit with night vision and two-way audio is plenty for a hallway, a shop counter or a nursery, and indoor cameras can use a standard USB power adapter. Outdoor cameras are a different product: look for an IP66 rating, which means the unit is sealed against dust and powerful water jets. That matters more here than in a temperate climate, because an outdoor camera in a Dubai summer is exposed to 50C ambient air, direct sun and the occasional monsoon burst.

Resolution should be judged against where the camera actually points. 2K is the sweet spot for a driveway or a gate where you want to identify a face or a number plate; 1080p is fine for a corridor. Full-colour night vision, where the picture stays in colour after dark, is worth paying for if the area is lit by street lighting.

Storage is the other fork. A microSD card in the camera keeps recording with no subscription and no internet dependency, which is the more robust choice. Cloud recording gives you off-site backup and easier playback, but usually runs on a monthly plan. Several of the cameras we stock also support a video doorbell form factor with a chime unit inside, covering the front door without a cable.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need internet for a security camera to work?

It depends on the storage model. Cameras that record to a microSD card keep recording locally even if your internet drops, and only need the connection for live view and app access. Cloud-only recording stops when the internet does. For a villa or a shop where uninterrupted recording matters, local card storage is the safer choice.

What is the difference between 1080p and 2K?

2K is roughly 2300 pixels wide against 1920 for 1080p — enough extra detail to identify a face or read a number plate at a gate or driveway. 1080p is perfectly adequate indoors for a corridor, a shop counter or a nursery. Resolution matters most where the camera is far from its subject.

Is an outdoor camera safe in Dubai's summer heat?

Only if it is rated for it. Look for an IP66 rating, which certifies the unit against dust and powerful water jets, and check that it is rated for high ambient operating temperatures. A camera without an IP rating is built for indoor use and will fail in direct sun. Position it in shade where possible and avoid mounting it where the afternoon sun hits the housing directly.

Do these cameras come with a microSD card?

Most models support a microSD card, and several bundles include one pre-installed. Cards are sold separately in many cases, so check the listing. A 32 GB card typically holds several days of continuous recording depending on resolution and motion-detection settings.
