Buying guide
A power socket is the point where a building's wiring meets your devices, and in the UAE the two things that catch people out are the plug standard and the total load.
The UAE uses the British Type G three-pin socket: rectangular, with a ground pin. Every adaptor and multi-socket we sell is Type G, so it fits directly into a wall without a converter. If you have bought travel adaptors, you can skip them.
The number to check is the wattage rating, and it is easy to misread. A socket is rated for a maximum total load — 3,000 W for a heavy-duty multi-socket, around 2,650 W for a standard one. That figure covers everything plugged into it at once, not per device. A 1,500 W kettle and a 200 W laptop on the same extension will exceed a 2,650 W socket. When in doubt, split the load across two sockets rather than pushing one.
USB-C Power Delivery built into the socket is the feature that has changed this category. A modern multi-socket with 65 W of USB-C output charges a phone at full speed and can run a laptop from the wall, which means one socket in the kitchen or the bedside replaces a charger, a cable and often a power strip. For a desk, a multi-socket with two AC outlets, two USB-A and one USB-C PD port covers everything. Never run a socket above its rating, and never daisy-chain a multi-socket into another multi-socket.
Frequently asked questions
How many devices can I plug into one multi-port socket?
Up to its rated wattage in total, across every outlet and USB port combined. A standard multi-socket is rated around 2,650 W and a heavy-duty one around 3,000 W. A laptop charger, a phone and a lamp together sit well under that. A kettle or an iron on the same socket will not — keep high-draw appliances on a dedicated socket.
Do I need a surge protector in the UAE?
It is worth having for computers, TVs and other sensitive electronics, and it costs little. The mains supply here is stable, but the value is in the protection against a sudden spike. Choose a model with an indicator light so you can tell it is still protecting, and with a combined joule rating of 500 or more for anything expensive.
Can I use a power socket for a water heater or kettle?
A kettle is fine on a properly rated socket, but keep it on a dedicated one rather than sharing with other high-draw devices. A water heater should be on its own circuit entirely, following the manufacturer's instructions. Never plug a heater into a multi-socket or an extension, and never exceed the socket's wattage rating.
Which socket type do I need in the UAE?
Type G, the British three-pin standard with a rectangular body and a ground pin. Everything in this category is Type G and fits a UAE wall socket directly with no converter. If you have a Type A or Type C plug, you will need an adaptor for it to work here.
