Buying guide
Bluetooth speakers are now a first purchase rather than an accessory, and the gap between a 16 W portable and a 40 W unit is far bigger than the price suggests. The number that matters is watts: it sets how loud the speaker can play before it runs out of headroom.
For a desk, a kitchen or a bedroom, 10–20 W is genuinely loud enough for most rooms and the battery lasts all day. For a balcony, a picnic or a beach, 30 W and upward matters — a 16 W speaker that sounds fine in a bedroom is inaudible outdoors. For a party you want 40 W and a passive radiator for real bass rather than a small driver trying to imitate it.
The second spec is the IP rating, and in the UAE it is not optional. IP67 means the speaker survives being submerged in water for thirty minutes; IPX7 handles splashes and rain but not submersion. Both are far beyond what a covered patio needs, and neither survives 50 °C air and a closed car interior, so never leave one charging in a parked vehicle in summer.
Bluetooth 5.3 or better gives you a stable link at range, and pairing two units of the same model as a stereo pair is worth doing — one speaker cannot create a stereo image. Check the battery figure honestly — it is quoted at 50% volume, and the difference between 12 and 30 hours decides how often you charge it.
Frequently asked questions
How many watts do I need for a portable Bluetooth speaker?
10–20 W is enough for a desk, a bedroom or a kitchen. 30 W is the right starting point for a balcony or a picnic, where you are competing with traffic and conversation. 40 W and above is for a party or a pool area. The wattage is the peak output, so a 20 W speaker can sound louder and cleaner at low volume than a 40 W speaker pushed to its limit.
What does IP67 mean and do I need it in Dubai?
IP67 means the speaker is dust-tight and survives being submerged in one metre of water for thirty minutes. IPX7 is the same without the dust rating. Neither is needed for a dry living room, and both are worth having for a pool, a balcony or a beach trip. Keep in mind that no IP rating covers heat — never leave a speaker charging in a car parked in the sun.
Can I pair two speakers for stereo?
Usually, but only two units of the same model from the same manufacturer. Most brands let you link a second speaker for true left and right stereo, which a single speaker cannot reproduce, and some add a party mode that chains several units. Check that your model supports stereo pairing before buying a second one — mixing different models usually gives you two independent speakers rather than a stereo pair.
Why does my speaker lose battery faster in the summer?
A lithium battery loses capacity in heat, and a speaker running at full volume in 45 °C air is working harder than the same speaker indoors. This is why the quoted battery life is usually measured at 50% volume and around 25 °C. Treat the figure as a best case, keep the unit shaded and out of direct sun, and expect noticeably less runtime through a Dubai summer.
